In 1967-8 we lived in Southport, when I was 9-10 years old and obsessed with all things "horsey". Every day I went off to Trinity Hall school by taxi from our home near Hesketh Park, but couldn't wait for the weekends when I could spend all day at the Mary Bowler Riding School in Formby. We went to the Grand National Meeting in both 1967 and 1968 and I watched the horses in the parade ring and got my dad to put bets on the ones I picked out. 2 of the horses I remember clearly were a little grey called Welsh Warrior and Red Alligator, but there was one that I remember the most vividly, mainly because he had the most amazing eyes, and that was the one and only Red Rum.
